Swingbridge | Grant Ramsay aka Swampy

Swingbridge is the musical vehicle of club regular, songwriter Bridget Ellis, with the fine company of double bassist Matt Sanson and saxophonist Chris Meech. This recent incarnation was brought together for the Moth Light Cabaret, an event in the 2024 Dunedin Fringe Festival. Songs personal and universal, journey through intricate folk to spacious jazz, from punchy rock to uncharted country.

Grant Ramsay a.k.a. Swampy

"Born and raised in Invercargill in a house on the edge of town, a stone’s throw across the railway tracks, flax and mud to the mighty Waihopai River. I started learning classical guitar when I was 10 but by 13 I had discovered barre chords and the Velvet Underground. Rejoiced in making indecipherable noise and songs with a couple of mates in the family garage. Biked around a lot in between times. Left home and moved to Dunedin in the 80’s. Beneath the all-pervasive ‘Dunedin Sound’ was another world of punk, ska and hypnotic dream pop experimentation. I continued to write and record my own tunes and made a few CDs and tapes. I played guitar, drums and trombone in a couple of bands in Wellington and Melbourne and eventually landed back in Dunedin. After playing solo for a few more years, I am now very fond of playing with local band Tiny Pieces of Eight. God bless her and all who sail in her.

Some music influences: Memphis Minnie, Roger Miller, Elizabeth Cotton, Patsy Cline, George Clinton, Fela Kuti, Lee Scratch Perry, The Raincoats, Brian Eno, Can, The Fall, The Mekons, Ani Choying Drolma.
