Cap'n Spoonbill & The Hoiho

Forged in the coldest depths of the South Pacific and loved by sailors and landlubbers alike, Cap'n Spoonbill and the Hoiho are an a cappella singing group from Ōtepoti/Dunedin, New Zealand. A shambolic assembly of professional musicians and shanty enthusiasts just looking for the next blowhole, the Hoiho crew will have you singing along like the saltiest sea dog you've never met.

Their interactive singing concerts have featured everything from historical tales and local lore, to Christmas shanties and riské dramatisations of the Titanic's last voyage. Blasting rowdy sea shanties and sweet harmonies into every corner of their home city, the group embraces the strong community origins of shanties and folk songs. To the world they bring songs from New Zealand’s rugged and isolated coastlines.

The Hoiho include Lara Robertson, Harriet Love, Alan Ned Gray, Boaz Anema, Robert Milne, Ella Campbell, Hyram Ballard and Brendan Christie.

Capn Spoonbill was last seen in the water off Cape Horn.

Check out the excellent video on this page about Mermaid Merle. Music and lyrics by Sue Galvin.
