Steep Street

Steep Street are a fresh Dunedin alt-folk band playing mostly originals plus a few well-chosen covers from the last fifty years of popular song.

Harold Bernhardt, the lead singer and guitarist, has been writing songs now for almost that long himself, previously having recorded as a solo musician and with the duo The Kites. Bridget Ellis, bass and harmonies, will be familiar to local audiences for her intimate and engaging performances as Swingbridge. Alan McCulloch, on violin and mandolin, has been playing fiddle and violin for various community orchestras around Dunedin for ages, and has been a closet mandolin busker for even longer than that, preferring venues with plenty of reverb and not too many people (empty squash courts are the best ! ). And drummer and percussionist Allen Frazer has a long history of music-making, going back to the 1980s during the Dunedin Sound era.

Steep Street’s debut album, recorded with engineer Tom Bell, is set for release this spring.

While difficult to categorise the music, lyrics of thoughtful angst and unrequited love set to folk rock with a swing in it's step is a good starting point. Hope you can come along and enjoy.
