Yujing Cui

Originally from China, now settled in Christchurch / Ōtautahi, Yujing presents a musical journey between East and West, between traditional and modern, between the familiar and the faraway...

Yujing plays the pipa, a traditional Chinese instrument with a history dating back over 2,000 years. She plays ancient melodies on this instrument, while also exploring how its voice can reach into modern indie folk and rock.

Yujing writes and sings songs that express her thoughts and perspectives, shaped by a time of rapid change in China. She appreciates the curiosity audiences show towards her culture and the society she grew up in, as well as their gentle and respectful approach. She is open to connecting with audiences through the stories behind her songs, the social context behind them, and her own observations and reflections.

At the Whare Flat Folk Festival last year, Yujing received wonderful responses and heart-warming words from audiences. She is excited to return to Dunedin, reconnect with old friends, make new ones, and present a thoughtfully crafted performance.
